Upper GI Series
An upper gastrointestinal (GI) series is an imaging test that uses barium contrast material and a type of X-ray technology called fluoroscopy to examine the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract. Before the test, you’ll drink a combination of water and barium contrast material—which is a viscous liquid that covers the inside of your gastrointestinal organs.
As this mixture travels through the digestive tract, it essentially lights up the organs on a nearby screen to give the radiologist a clearer picture of them in action. The radiologist will take X-ray images of the organs for further examination. The exam takes about 30 minutes to complete.

What Does the Upper GI Consist Of?
The upper GI is the upper portion of your gastrointestinal—or digestive—tract. It consists of the:
- Esophagus
- Stomach
- Duodenum—the top section of the small intestine
What to Expect After an Upper GI Series
You may experience the following side effects after undergoing an upper GI series:
- Cramping in your lower abdomen and bloating in the first hour after the exam
- White or light-colored stool as the barium contrast material flushes through your digestive system
You will be cleared to resume most normal activities upon leaving the outpatient facility. A medical professional on staff will provide you with post-procedure care instructions. Follow these instructions closely to ensure you properly flush the barium contrast material from your digestive system. The radiologist will send your X-rays—along with an X-ray report—to your doctor.
Why It’s Done
An upper GI series is performed to detect any structural or functional abnormalities in the digestive system. Common symptoms that necessitate an upper GI series include the following:
- Swallowing problems
- Heartburn
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Indigestion
