Understanding Hospital Charges, Billing, and Payment

Methodist McKinney Hospital is committed  to fulfilling its mission to provide quality and compassionate health care services to people from all walks of life.  Our goal is to help you understand the charge, billing, and payment process prior to your visit so you can make an informed decision regarding your health care out of pocket costs.

In most cases, financial arrangements and insurance verification are confirmed with the patient prior to or at hospital registration.  As a patient of Methodist McKinney Hospital, and a partner of our health care team, it is your responsibility to pay for the health care services provided to you.

How to Request a Hospital Charge Estimate

Methodist McKinney Hospital believes it is important for our patients to understand their potential financial liability before services are performed. Patients are encouraged to request a charge estimate for any hospital procedure/service/test by calling our facility financial counselor at 972-569-2700 and choosing option 5. Estimates are based on information provided by you (the patient) and do not include additional tests/procedures/services ordered by your physician after the initial estimate or post unforeseen complications, or physician charges which are billed separately by your physician.

Physician Billing Process
Physicians are independent contractors and are not employed by Methodist McKinney Hospital and physician prices are set by the individual physician practice. Professional fees charged by these physicians for services provided to you will be billed by these physicians separately from the fees charged by the hospital. Some of these physicians may be considered out of network by your insurance carrier. You will need to work with your insurance carrier to address this issue.

Physicians who will bill you separately and may be out of network include but are not limited to:

  • Primary Care Physicians
  • Specialty Care Physicians
  • Radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Surgeons
  • Emergency Room Physicians
  • Hospitalists

With Insurance

If you have insurance, we will bill your insurance company shortly after health care services are provided and you will receive a letter notifying you your insurance has been billed.  It usually takes 30-45 days for your insurance company to pay your bill.  After your insurance company pays us, we will send you a bill for the amount you owe after insurance.

This facility will bill your primary and secondary insurance carriers or governmental agency directly for the facility fees. Be sure to bring your most current primary and secondary insurance, Medicare or public assistance card with you on the day you receive hospital services.

Please be aware of your insurance plan’s admission policies. You or your physician may have to adhere to certain requirements in order to ensure maximum reimbursement. Failure to obtain pre-authorization, physician referral or a second opinion may greatly reduce or eliminate your benefits.
