What is a TIF Procedure?
TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication) is a minimally invasive procedure that stops chronic acid reflux at its source—also known as heartburn, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophagitis. TIF treats additional symptoms associated with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). TIF is a safer and more effective alternative to traditional anti-reflux surgery used to treat GERD.
What Is GERD?
GERD occurs when stomach acid re-enters the esophagus, causing pain and discomfort. Taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like Prilosec®️ and Nexium®️, won’t cure chronic acid reflux. They only help manage its symptoms by suppressing acid production. The esophageal valve is still not working properly, and the use of PPIs won’t fix it.
If you experience chronic GERD symptoms that do not resolve with medications or other at-home treatments, you may want to consult a doctor about TIF.
How Does the TIF Procedure Work?
GERD symptoms are often caused by a malfunctioning gastroesophageal (GE) junction valve. A fully functioning GE junction valve acts as an esophageal cover that keeps stomach acid where it should be.
The TIF procedure involves creating a stronger, more supportive band of tissue around the area where the stomach meets the esophagus. The goal of this treatment is to create a stronger barrier so acid can’t resurface and cause GERD symptoms.
6 Benefits of the TIF Procedure
Pain Relief
The TIP procedure offers long-term pain relief from GERD.
Minimally Invasive
This laparoscopic approach allows for a quicker recovery time than traditional surgery. Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days after surgery.
Safe
Thousands of procedures have been performed worldwide with minimal complications. TIF patients rarely experience long-term side effects—like gas, bloating, and trouble swallowing, which are common with conventional GERD surgery.
Restores Valve to a Natural State
Patients can maintain normal bodily functions after the TIF procedure.
Incision-Free
The TIF procedure is performed with an endoscopic device that enters and exits your mouth, leaving no residual scars.
No Dissection of the Stomach
Traditional anti-reflux surgery requires the doctor to cut around other organs, which can lead to complications and a longer recovery period. TIF is a minimally-invasive procedure that requires no cutting, which means no internal scar tissue is left behind.
How Long Does the TIF Procedure Take?
The TIF procedure itself only takes one hour to complete. Your doctor will keep you for a short observation period following surgery to ensure proper healing.
