A colon resection surgery—also known as a colectomy—removes part or all of the colon. The colon is a key part of the digestive system, as it removes waste from the body. These are the three main types of colectomy procedures.

What Is Recovery Like After a Colon Resection?
Here’s a breakdown of the average colectomy patient’s recovery.
- Immediately following your procedure, you’ll be moved to a recovery room for monitoring.
- Once you awake from the anesthesia, you’ll continue recovering in your hospital room until you regain normal bowel functions. This process can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week.
- If you can’t eat solid foods right away, you’ll either receive liquid nutrition through an IV or drinks, then work your way up to solid foods.
- Upon returning home, you will require another two or more weeks to fully recover. Your doctor will provide pain medication as needed.
At the end of the day, the length of one’s recovery depends on the type of colectomy performed and the patient’s overall health.
